Hermit crabs as pets: yes or no?

Background

Hermit crabs are silent, need little space and are fun to watch, especially when they swap shells, so they are often sold as starter pets. Yet with proper care they can live for decades, while many sold as souvenirs die within months, so many people urge thorough research first. Humidity, warmth and spare shells are essential.
