Can dogs and cats eat Mayonnaise?

Mayonnaise isn't toxic, but it's mostly oil and can cause stomach upset or pancreatitis in larger amounts; don't use it as a treat.

Why

Mayonnaise is made from oil, egg yolk and vinegar and is over 70% fat. A small lick is no problem, but larger amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea and pancreatitis. Flavored versions like garlic or wasabi mayo, and mayo-based salads with onion or grapes, can be riskier because of the other ingredients. Pets sometimes chew and swallow tube caps or containers too.

How to give it / if eaten

Don't give it. A small lick just needs watching. Call your vet if your pet ate more than a spoonful, or ate garlic mayo or a salad with onion. With a pancreatitis history, call even for a small amount.

Watch for these signs

Loose stool, diarrhea or vomiting may occur. Repeated vomiting, a hunched posture and poor appetite over 1โ€“3 days may mean pancreatitis.

FAQ

My dog chewed open a mayonnaise tube and ate it.

A lot of mayo risks pancreatitis, and swallowed plastic can cause a blockage. Check how much is missing and call your vet.

What about a tuna-mayo rice ball?

It combines mayo with salt and salty seaweed. A bite or two just needs watching; call your vet if a lot was eaten. See our canned tuna page too.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
