Why
Sesame seeds aren't toxic and small amounts are fine, though most pass through undigested. Sesame oil is 100% fat, so larger amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea or pancreatitis. Korean dishes dressed with sesame oil, like seasoned greens or bulgogi, usually also contain garlic, green onion and soy sauce, which are the bigger concern. Sesame allergy is possible but rare.
How to give it / if eaten
A pinch of ground toasted sesame on food is fine. Don't give sesame oil on purpose; if your pet licked up a spill, estimate how much. Call your vet if it was a tablespoon or more or if vomiting or diarrhea continues.
Watch for these signs
After a lot of sesame oil: vomiting, diarrhea and greasy stool, and repeated vomiting, belly pain or loss of appetite over 1โ3 days may mean pancreatitis. After lots of seeds, you may simply see them in the stool.
FAQ
My pet ate seasoned laver with sesame oil.
Seasoned laver has sesame oil and salt. A sheet or two is usually fine; if your pet ate a lot, offer plenty of water and watch for vomiting or diarrhea. See our seaweed page too.
Is sesame oil good for the coat?
The evidence is weak, and the fat and calories can cause diarrhea or weight gain. For coat health, ask your vet about an appropriate supplement.
