Should house rabbits free-roam instead of living in a cage?

Background

Rabbits are active animals that need hours of running and binkying each day, so more owners now let them roam a rabbit-proofed room. Others point out that rabbits chew cables and furniture, and a large pen or cage is safer when nobody is home. Plenty of households end up combining the two approaches.
