Axolotl tanks: bare bottom or fine sand?

Background

Bare-bottom tanks are easy to clean and remove any risk of swallowing substrate along with food, so they are often recommended for beginners. Fans of very fine sand say it usually passes through harmlessly and gives axolotls better grip, which may lower stress. Both camps agree that coarse gravel is a definite no.
