Why
Almonds aren't toxic the way macadamias are, but they're hard and dogs tend to swallow them whole, which can block the throat or intestines. Their high fat can cause stomach upset or pancreatitis, and store-bought almonds are often salted or coated with flavors like honey butter or wasabi.
How to give it / if eaten
There's no need to offer them. If your pet snatched one or two, it's usually fine; watch for vomiting or stool changes. Call your vet if a lot was eaten, they were flavored, or your dog is small.
Watch for these signs
Vomiting, diarrhea, gas and poor appetite are common. A stuck nut causes gagging or coughing, a blockage causes repeated vomiting and constipation, and salted almonds can cause intense thirst.
FAQ
My dog ate a couple of almonds. Should I worry?
A couple of plain almonds usually cause no major problem. Watch for vomiting or constipation over the next day or two.
Is almond milk okay?
A few licks of unsweetened almond milk are fine, but avoid sweetened versions or any with xylitol. There's no nutritional reason to offer it.
