Can dogs and cats eat Cat Food (for Dogs)?

A dog eating some cat food now and then is fine, but it's rich in fat and protein, so regular snacking raises the risk of obesity, upset stomach and pancreatitis.

Why

Cat food is built for cats' high protein needs, so it's richer in protein, fat and calories than dog food. Dogs that eat it often tend to gain weight and get diarrhea, and fat-sensitive dogs can develop pancreatitis. Dogs with a history of kidney disease or pancreatitis should especially avoid it. For cats, it's a complete diet.

How to give it / if eaten

Feed the cat somewhere the dog can't reach, such as a cat tree or high shelf, at set times, and pick up leftovers. A one-time raid usually just needs watching. Give cats a complete food appropriate for their age, following the feeding guide.

Watch for these signs

Dogs that overeat it often vomit, have diarrhea or gas. Severe vomiting, belly pain, a hunched back and loss of appetite may signal pancreatitis and need a vet right away.

FAQ

My dog ate the cat's food. Is that a problem?

A one-off small amount is usually fine. Watch the stool for a day or two and separate feeding areas so it doesn't become a habit.

Can dogs and cats share one food?

We don't recommend it. Their nutritional needs differ, so each should eat food made for its own species.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
