Why
Beef and chicken liver are rich in protein, iron and B vitamins and very palatable. But liver is extremely high in vitamin A, and eating a lot over time can cause vitamin A toxicity that affects bones and joints; cases in cats fed liver as a main food are well documented. Raw liver carries bacteria and parasite risks, so always cook it.
How to give it / if eaten
Cook it through without seasoning and cut it small. Keep liver to no more than about 5% of the overall diet, a few small portions a week. A few fingernail-sized bits are plenty for cats and small dogs.
Watch for these signs
A large serving at once may cause loose stool or diarrhea. Long-term excess can cause vitamin A toxicity: joint pain, limping, a stiff neck and weight loss.
FAQ
My dog had diarrhea after eating a lot of liver.
Liver is rich and often causes diarrhea in large servings. Watch for a day or two, and call your vet if vomiting joins in or it continues.
Can I give chicken liver treats every day?
Tiny pieces may be okay, but it's important that liver stays a small share of the overall diet. Ask your vet about frequency and amount.
