Why
Turkey breast is a lean protein used widely in pet foods and treats. Holiday turkey, however, is often rubbed with butter, garlic, onion and herbs and filled with stuffing, which makes it risky. The skin is greasy and the cooked bones splinter. Turkey ham and deli slices are very salty.
How to give it / if eaten
Boil or roast breast meat plain, remove skin and bones and shred it small. Keep it within 10% of daily calories. Don't give stuffing, gravy or seasoned skin.
Watch for these signs
Usually none, but skin or fatty parts may cause diarrhea or vomiting. If a bone was swallowed, watch for repeated vomiting, poor appetite and constipation.
FAQ
My dog ate turkey stuffing.
Stuffing often contains onion, garlic, butter and bread. Estimate the amount and call your vet.
Are deli turkey slices okay?
They're salty and full of additives, so not a good treat. One slice just needs watching, but don't give them on purpose.
