Why
Peas offer fiber, vitamins and plant protein and are common pet food ingredients. They aren't toxic, but too many can cause gas and diarrhea. They contain purines, so pets with a history of urate stones should avoid them. Canned peas are often salty.
How to give it / if eaten
Steam or boil fresh or frozen peas plain. A few peas for cats and small dogs and about a tablespoon for large dogs is enough. Remove tough pods from shelling peas.
Watch for these signs
Too many may cause gas, loose stool or diarrhea.
FAQ
Is it bad if my pet's food has lots of peas?
A possible link between legume-heavy grain-free diets and heart disease has been studied without a firm conclusion. If you're worried, discuss diet choice with your vet. A few peas as a treat are fine.
Can I give frozen peas straight from the bag?
They're small, so a few as a summer snack is fine. Too many can upset the stomach, so keep portions modest.
