Can dogs and cats eat Korean Radish (Mu)?

Korean radish is a fine vegetable for dogs and cats in small amounts; raw radish is sharp and hard, so cook it or chop it small.

Why

Radish is watery, low in calories and has no known toxins. Raw radish has a peppery bite that can irritate the mouth, and hard chunks can be a choking risk. Blanched radish greens are fine in small amounts too. Kkakdugi, yellow pickled radish, seasoned radish salad and braised radish contain salt, sugar, garlic or chili and shouldn't be shared.

How to give it / if eaten

Boil or steam it plain and cut it into small pieces. One or two pieces for cats and small dogs and a few for large dogs is enough. If giving it raw, julienne it thinly and offer only a little.

Watch for these signs

Too much may cause gas, loose stool or diarrhea. If a big chunk was swallowed, watch for gagging or vomiting.

FAQ

What about pickled radish or kkakdugi?

Yellow pickled radish is full of sugar and salt, and kkakdugi has salt, garlic and chili, so skip both. See our kimchi page too.

Can I share radish from radish soup?

Radish soup is made with salt, soy sauce, garlic and green onion. Boil some plain radish separately instead.
