Can dogs and cats eat Pomegranate?

Pomegranate isn't toxic, but it easily upsets dogs' and cats' stomachs; there's no need to share it, and a few seeds usually just need watching.

Why

The seeds (arils) contain antioxidants, but compounds such as tannins make many dogs vomit or get diarrhea if they eat a lot. Each aril holds a hard seed, and the rind and white membrane are bitter and indigestible. Pomegranate extract appears in some pet foods, but that's different from eating the fruit. It offers cats no nutritional benefit either.

How to give it / if eaten

It's best not to offer it. If you do, give just a few arils without rind or white membrane and check the stool afterward. If your pet chewed the rind or ate a lot, call your vet.

Watch for these signs

Vomiting, diarrhea, belly pain and poor appetite may occur. If a lot of rind was eaten, watch for repeated vomiting or constipation.

FAQ

Pomegranate is in some pet foods. Why be careful with fresh fruit?

Pet foods use small amounts of processed extract. The whole fruit brings seeds, rind and tannins that are harder on digestion, so it's not the same.

Is pomegranate juice okay?

It's sugary and acidic and can cause diarrhea, so it's best avoided.
