Can dogs and cats eat Tofu?

Plain blanched tofu is an okay protein snack in small amounts, but it can cause gas or soy allergy, and tofu from braised dishes or stews should be avoided.

Why

Tofu isn't toxic and provides protein, so small amounts are fine. Some pets are allergic to soy, though, and too much can cause gas or loose stool. Tofu from braised dishes or stews absorbs soy sauce, garlic, green onion and chili, which makes it unsafe. Cats are carnivores and do better with animal protein.

How to give it / if eaten

Blanch plain tofu briefly to rinse off the coagulant and salt, then cut into small unseasoned cubes. One or two cubes is enough for a cat or small dog; keep treats under 10% of daily calories. Skip fried, seasoned or pouched tofu.

Watch for these signs

Too much can cause gas, bloating and loose stool. Soy allergy may show as itching, licking ears or paws, red skin, vomiting or diarrhea.

FAQ

Can I give my dog tofu every day?

A small treat-sized amount is okay, but large daily portions can unbalance the diet and cause gas. Rotate it with other treats.

Can I fish tofu out of a stew to give my pet?

Tofu from a stew has soaked up garlic, green onion, salt and chili, so don't. Blanch a separate piece without seasoning instead.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
