Why
Beef is rich in protein, iron and zinc and is widely used in pet foods. Fatty cuts can trigger diarrhea or pancreatitis, and bulgogi or galbi marinades contain garlic, onion, soy sauce and sugar. Raw beef carries bacterial risk, so cooking is safer. Beef is also one of the more common food allergens in dogs and cats.
How to give it / if eaten
Trim off as much fat as possible, boil or pan-cook without salt or seasoning until done, and cut into small pieces. Keep treats under 10% of daily calories, and remove bones and tough gristle.
Watch for these signs
Too much fatty beef can cause diarrhea, vomiting and belly pain, and in severe cases pancreatitis. Allergy shows as itching, ear inflammation and red skin.
FAQ
Can I feed raw beef?
Raw beef can carry Salmonella and E. coli, which can sicken both pets and people. Cooked is the safer choice.
Is a piece of bulgogi or marinated galbi okay?
The marinade contains garlic, onion and green onion, so don't. Set aside a plain piece before seasoning and cook it separately.
