Why
Clams, oysters and mussels are rich in protein and minerals. Raw, however, they can carry bacteria like Vibrio, norovirus and, seasonally, paralytic shellfish toxins. Shells are sharp and indigestible and can injure the mouth and gut. Clam soup, wine-steamed clams and spicy oyster salad contain garlic, alcohol, salt or chili. Some pets are allergic to shellfish.
How to give it / if eaten
Cook it through without seasoning, remove the meat from the shell and chop it: one or two pieces for cats and small dogs and a few for large dogs. Don't give raw oysters, raw clams or seasoned dishes. Throw shells away immediately.
Watch for these signs
Vomiting or diarrhea may occur. Fever, severe diarrhea or lethargy after raw shellfish may be food poisoning, and rarely shellfish toxins cause drooling, wobbliness or paralysis. If shells were swallowed, watch for repeated vomiting and poor appetite.
FAQ
My dog ate a raw oyster.
There's a bacteria and toxin risk, so watch for vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy and call your vet if symptoms appear or several were eaten. If drooling or wobbliness appears, go in right away.
Is clam soup broth okay?
It usually contains salt, garlic, hot pepper or alcohol. Skip the broth and give only a little separately cooked, unseasoned clam meat.
