Why
Roe itself has protein and omega-3s, but products like myeongnan-jeot, changran-jeot, salmon roe and flying fish roe are salted or seasoned and very high in sodium. Myeongnan can also contain chili and garlic. Raw roe carries bacteria and parasite risks. It's high in cholesterol and purines too, so pets with urate stones should avoid it.
How to give it / if eaten
Don't give it as a treat. A little flying fish roe from kimbap or sushi just needs plenty of water and watching. Call your vet if your pet ate a whole sac of myeongnan or a large amount.
Watch for these signs
Extreme thirst, frequent urination, vomiting and diarrhea may occur. Large amounts can cause salt poisoning with wobbliness, tremors or seizures.
FAQ
My dog ate a whole piece of myeongnan.
It's extremely salty, which can be dangerous especially for small dogs. Let your dog drink water and call your vet right away.
Is cooked fish roe okay?
Unsalted cooked roe is fine in tiny amounts, but almost all store-bought roe is salted. There's no need to share it.
