Why
Mackerel is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and protein and is used in pet foods and wet cans. It's fatty, though, so too much can cause diarrhea, and its bones can lodge in the mouth or throat. Korean salted mackerel (jaban godeungeo) is cured in salt and very high in sodium. Mackerel that isn't fresh can build up histamine, causing vomiting or facial flushing.
How to give it / if eaten
Grill or steam fresh, unsalted mackerel plain and pick out every bone. About a teaspoon for cats and small dogs and a tablespoon or two for large dogs, occasionally. Don't give salted mackerel, braised mackerel or raw mackerel.
Watch for these signs
Too much may cause loose stool, diarrhea or vomiting. A stuck bone causes drooling, pawing at the mouth and gagging. Spoiled mackerel can cause vomiting, diarrhea and red face or ears soon after eating.
FAQ
My cat ate some salted mackerel.
For a small bite, offer plenty of water and watch. If a lot was eaten or extreme thirst, vomiting or wobbliness appears, call your vet right away.
Is canned mackerel for people okay?
Most are packed in brine or sauce. Unless it's unsalted, skip it and use a pet mackerel can.
