Why
Store-bought culinary mushrooms like button, shiitake, oyster and enoki are not known to be toxic to pets. They aren't easy to digest, though, so raw or large servings can upset the stomach, and thin, chewy enoki can catch in the throat. Mushroom dishes usually include garlic, onion, butter or soy sauce. Wild mushrooms are extremely risky because toxic and edible species are hard to tell apart.
How to give it / if eaten
Cook store-bought mushrooms plain and chop them finely. About a teaspoon for cats and small dogs and a tablespoon for large dogs is plenty. Start small and check the stool. If your pet eats a wild mushroom on a walk, call your vet immediately.
Watch for these signs
Too much may cause vomiting, diarrhea or gas. After a wild mushroom, depending on the species: vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, wobbliness, seizures, or liver damage days later.
FAQ
My dog ate a mushroom on our walk.
It could be toxic, so call your vet or an emergency clinic right away, even without symptoms. Photograph or bag any remaining mushrooms to bring along. See our wild mushroom page too.
My pet ate some stir-fried mushrooms.
The garlic, onion and soy sauce are a bigger concern than the mushrooms. Estimate the amount and call your vet if your pet is small, a cat, or ate a lot.
