Can dogs and cats eat Peach?

Peach flesh is fine in small amounts, but the pit can block the gut and contains cyanide-forming compounds, so always remove it.

Why

Peach flesh offers vitamins and fiber and is fine in small amounts. The large, hard pit, though, can lodge in the throat or intestines, and the pit, leaves and stems contain compounds that release cyanide. The sugar can cause diarrhea in larger amounts, and canned peaches in syrup should be avoided. Cats can't taste sweetness, so there's little reason to offer it.

How to give it / if eaten

Wash, remove the pit completely, peel and cut into small pieces. A piece or two for small dogs and a few for large dogs is plenty; keep treats under 10% of daily calories. Throw pits away where your pet can't reach them.

Watch for these signs

Too much can cause diarrhea, loose stool or vomiting. A swallowed pit can bring repeated vomiting, poor appetite, constipation and belly pain; after a chewed pit, watch for labored breathing and bright red gums.

FAQ

My dog swallowed a peach pit.

Peach pits are large and often cause blockages. Contact your vet or an emergency clinic right away, even if your dog seems fine.

Are canned peaches okay?

They're soaked in sugary syrup. Offer a little fresh peach flesh instead.
