Why
Salmon is rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids that support skin and coat, and it's common in pet foods. Raw salmon can carry parasites, and dogs eating raw Pacific Northwest salmon can get salmon poisoning disease, which can be fatal, so cooking is safer. Smoked salmon is very salty, and small pin bones can lodge in the throat.
How to give it / if eaten
Remove bones and skin, steam or bake without salt or butter until cooked through, and flake it into small pieces. Keep treats under 10% of daily calories; a few times a week is plenty.
Watch for these signs
Too much can cause diarrhea, vomiting or loose stool. A stuck bone causes gagging, drooling and pawing at the mouth. If a dog that ate raw salmon develops fever, vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy days later, see a vet right away.
FAQ
Can my pet eat salmon skin?
A little plain cooked skin is fine, but it's fatty and can cause diarrhea. Skip skin cooked with oil and salt.
Is smoked salmon okay?
Smoked salmon is very salty and not truly cooked, so we don't recommend it. Offer plain salmon you've cooked yourself.
