Can dogs and cats eat Shrimp?

Cooked, peeled shrimp is fine in small amounts, but shells can cause blockages and some pets are allergic, so feed it with care.

Why

Shrimp meat is high in protein and low in fat, but raw shrimp can carry bacteria and parasites. Hard shells and tails can choke a pet or block the gut. Some dogs and cats are allergic to shellfish, so start very small. Fried, seasoned or snack-style shrimp products are high in oil and salt.

How to give it / if eaten

Remove the shell, head, tail and vein, then boil or steam plainly and chop into small pieces. One or two shrimp is plenty for a cat or small dog; keep treats under 10% of daily calories. Watch for allergic reactions the first time.

Watch for these signs

Allergy signs include itching, red face or ears, hives, vomiting and diarrhea. A stuck shell can cause gagging, repeated vomiting, constipation and belly pain. Facial swelling or trouble breathing needs a vet immediately.

FAQ

My dog ate shrimp shells. Is that okay?

Small amounts often pass, but shells can irritate or block the gut. See your vet if you notice vomiting, constipation or loss of appetite.

Are shrimp-flavored chips okay?

Shrimp chips are oily, salty and seasoned, so they're not a good treat. One or two won't hurt, but don't offer them on purpose.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
