Why
Plain white or whole-wheat bread isn't toxic, so a bite or two is usually fine. It's high in calories for little nutrition, though, so frequent feeding adds weight, and some pets are allergic to wheat. Raisin bread, garlic bread, chocolate bread, walnut or macadamia bread and sugar-free (xylitol) bread each contain toxic ingredients. Unbaked dough is a separate, serious danger.
How to give it / if eaten
Tear plain bread with no butter, jam or seasoning into small pieces and offer it only occasionally, keeping treats under 10% of daily calories. Check the ingredients for raisins, garlic, chocolate, nuts and xylitol first.
Watch for these signs
Too much can cause bloating, gas and loose stool, and wheat allergy can show as itching or diarrhea. If vomiting or lethargy follows raisin, garlic or chocolate bread, see a vet right away.
FAQ
Can I give my dog a slice of bread?
Plain bread isn't toxic, but a whole slice is a lot for a small dog. Tear off a small piece instead.
Is garlic bread okay?
No. It's loaded with garlic and butter. If your pet ate some, note the amount and check with your vet.
