Can dogs and cats eat Tteokbokki?

Tteokbokki combines spicy sauce with garlic, green onion, lots of salt and sugar, plus choke-prone rice cakes; never give it to dogs or cats.

🚨 If your pet ate something toxic, note the amount and time and call your vet, an emergency clinic or an animal poison hotline right away. Do not make your pet vomit at home unless a vet tells you to.

Why

Tteokbokki sauce is typically gochujang, chili flakes, soy sauce and sugar, often with garlic and green onion. Garlic and green onion damage red blood cells and can cause anemia, while the heat and heavy salt irritate the gut and cause extreme thirst. The chewy rice cakes and fish cakes are choking hazards. Cats are especially sensitive to the onion family, so even small amounts can matter.

How to give it / if eaten

If your pet ate tteokbokki, call your vet or an emergency clinic right away, even for a small amount. Tell them when it happened, roughly how much, and what was in it (green onion, garlic, onion). Don't make your pet vomit at home unless a vet tells you to. If it's gagging on a rice cake, go in immediately.

Watch for these signs

Within hours: vomiting, diarrhea, drooling and extreme thirst. One to five days later: weakness, pale gums, fast breathing and red or brown urine from anemia. A stuck rice cake causes gagging and trouble breathing.

FAQ

My dog licked a little tteokbokki sauce.

Even a lick or two depends on size and amount, so call your vet for advice. Offer plenty of water and keep an eye on energy and urine color for a few days.

RosΓ© or jjajang tteokbokki isn't spicy, though.

Even if it's mild, it still contains onion, garlic, salt, cream or black bean paste. If your pet ate some, call your vet.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
