Can dogs and cats eat Oatmeal?

Plain oatmeal cooked in water is fine for dogs and cats in small amounts; avoid flavored instant packets.

Why

Oats are a grain with fiber and protein and are sometimes used as an alternative grain for wheat-sensitive dogs. Raw oats are harder to digest, so cook them first. Flavored instant oatmeal may contain sugar, chocolate, raisins or xylitol, which can be dangerous. Oats carry calories, so large servings can add weight.

How to give it / if eaten

Cook plain oats thoroughly in water and let them cool. One or two teaspoons for cats and small dogs and two or three tablespoons for large dogs is plenty. Use water instead of milk and add no sugar, honey or salt.

Watch for these signs

Too much may cause gas, loose stool or diarrhea. If the product contained raisins or chocolate, watch for signs of those poisonings.

FAQ

Raisins can cause kidney damage in dogs and cats. Even if the amount was small, call your vet or an emergency clinic right away.

Is granola okay?
