Why
Caffeine is a methylxanthine like chocolate's theobromine, so it speeds the heart and excites the nervous system. Concentrated sources such as beans, grounds, instant coffee, caffeine pills and energy drinks are far more dangerous than a lick of brewed coffee. Cats are small, so less is needed to cause signs.
How to give it / if eaten
If your pet ate beans, grounds, instant coffee, tea bags or an energy drink, call your vet, an emergency clinic or a poison line right away with the product, amount and time. Don't induce vomiting at home without a vet's instruction.
Watch for these signs
Within 1โ2 hours: restlessness, hyperactivity, panting, vomiting and a fast heartbeat. Severe cases can involve tremors, high temperature, abnormal heart rhythm and seizures.
FAQ
My cat licked a little coffee. Is that dangerous?
A lick or two of brewed coffee usually isn't serious, but call your vet if your cat becomes agitated or vomits. Beans or grounds call for an immediate call.
What about green tea or black tea?
Both contain caffeine, so it's best not to share them. Tea bags and matcha powder are especially concentrated.
