Why
Juice strips out the fruit's fiber and concentrates the sugar, making diarrhea, vomiting and weight gain likely. Grape juice, like grapes, can cause kidney damage and is dangerous. Grapefruit and lemon juices are very acidic, and some sugar-free juices may contain xylitol. Even milder juices like apple or pear are a poor substitute for fresh fruit.
How to give it / if eaten
Don't give juice. A few sips of apple or pear juice just needs watching. If your pet drank grape juice or a blend containing grape, call your vet or an emergency clinic right away, even for a small amount. For sugar-free juice, check for xylitol.
Watch for these signs
Loose stool, diarrhea or vomiting may occur. After grape juice, watch within hours to a day for vomiting, lethargy and poor appetite, then reduced or no urine as the kidneys are affected.
FAQ
My dog licked a little grape juice.
Grape toxicity is unpredictable and doesn't track neatly with amount. Call your vet even for a small lick. See our grapes page too.
Is 100% pressed apple juice okay?
It isn't toxic, but it's very sugary. A few sips are fine, but small pieces of apple are a much better choice.
