Monstera, pothos, philodendron, dieffenbachia and peace lily are aroids containing needle-like insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing releases them into the mouth, tongue and throat, causing intense pain, drooling and swelling. The pain usually stops pets from eating much, so serious poisoning is uncommon, but throat swelling can rarely make breathing difficult. Because they're such popular houseplants, accidents are common.
How to give it / if eaten
If your pet chewed a leaf, wipe its mouth with water and call your vet or an emergency clinic right away with the plant name or a photo. Don't induce vomiting at home without a vet's instruction. If breathing is labored or the face or throat swells badly, go in immediately.
Watch for these signs
Right after chewing: heavy drooling, pawing at the mouth and head shaking. Lips, tongue and gums may swell, with vomiting, trouble swallowing and poor appetite. Rarely, throat swelling causes noisy breathing.
