Why
Sago palm is a popular ornamental, but every part contains a toxin called cycasin, with the seeds holding the most. Cycasin causes severe liver damage and neurological signs, and the death rate is high even with treatment. Signs can be delayed, so a pet that looks fine isn't necessarily safe. Cats are at risk too, though dog cases are reported more often.
How to give it / if eaten
If your pet ate any part of a sago palm, call your vet or an emergency clinic and go in immediately, even without symptoms; fast treatment greatly affects the outcome. Share which part, how much and when, and bring a photo or piece of the plant. Don't induce vomiting at home without a vet's instruction.
Watch for these signs
Usually within 15 minutes to a few hours: vomiting, diarrhea (possibly bloody), drooling and lethargy. Over 2โ3 days, liver failure and neurological signs can follow: yellow gums or eyes (jaundice), bruising, nosebleeds, wobbliness and seizures.
FAQ
My dog swallowed one sago palm seed and seems fine.
Even one seed can be dangerous, and liver damage signs appear later. Go to an emergency clinic right now.
Can I keep a sago palm indoors?
In a home with pets, it's safest not to have one. If you already do, keep it completely out of reach and pick up fallen leaves or seeds immediately.
General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
