Can dogs and cats eat Poinsettia?

Poinsettia is far less toxic than its reputation, usually causing only mouth irritation and mild stomach upset, but still keep it out of reach.

Why

Poinsettia has a scary reputation as a Christmas plant, but the ASPCA and Pet Poison Helpline classify it as mildly toxic. Its milky sap irritates the mouth and gut and can cause drooling and vomiting, but serious poisoning is rare. Sap on the skin or eyes can cause irritation. Holiday companions like mistletoe and holly can be more dangerous.

How to give it / if eaten

If your pet chewed a little, wipe its mouth with water and watch; most recover within hours. Call your vet if a lot was eaten or vomiting continues. If sap got in the eyes, rinse with clean water.

Watch for these signs

Drooling, lip-licking, vomiting and sometimes diarrhea. On skin: redness and itching; in the eyes: redness.

FAQ

My dog ate poinsettia leaves. Is it an emergency?

Usually not; it typically causes only mild irritation. Call your vet if a lot was eaten, vomiting repeats or your dog seems lethargic.

Is mistletoe similar?

Mistletoe is more toxic than poinsettia and can cause vomiting, diarrhea and rarely heart problems. Call your vet right away if it's eaten.
