Why
Some toxic mushrooms cause only vomiting and diarrhea, but others, such as certain Amanita species, destroy the liver and can be fatal. Even experts struggle to identify mushrooms from a photo, so treat every wild mushroom as dangerous. Dogs often eat them while sniffing on walks. Plain cooked store-bought mushrooms are usually fine in small amounts, but not when cooked with garlic or onion.
How to give it / if eaten
If your pet ate or might have eaten a wild mushroom, go to your vet or an emergency clinic right away. Bring any remaining mushrooms in a paper bag plus photos to help with identification, note the time, and don't induce vomiting at home unless a vet tells you to.
Watch for these signs
Varies by species: vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, wobbling, tremors or seizures. Liver-toxic mushrooms may cause signs 6โ24 hours later, a deceptive brief improvement, then jaundice, bleeding and profound weakness 1โ3 days later.
